Samsung Stratosphere i405 disassembly

How to replace your Samsung Stratosphere LCD. Samsung makes all of their Galaxy series phones with a one piece lens, LCD and digitizer. If you so much as crack the glass on the front of your phone it can be very expensive to replace. Since this phone has been around for a while i would consider looking for a used part if you need to perform this repair.

There are no real break away warranty voiding stickers on most newer Samsungs including this one. There is at least one piece of heat resistant tape on the flex cable that could allow the trained eye to detect tampering. I recommend that you listen to the audio if you plan to disassemble your phone. A lot of information has been narrated and will probably help you to avoid damaging it.

I’m at work and had to watch w/o volume (not sure if anything was said) But is there any warranty tape or anything that will be voided upon teardown of the device? I want to take it down just for the knowledge but don’t want to void anything.

The one I used is a PH.00 but most smaller sized cross-hair drivers will do the job.

what size is the screw driver?

I have successfully re-used the existing adhesive on about five of these phones and no complaints. You should be able to do the same if it still feels tacky. If it allowed dust to get inside and isn’t very sticky anymore you will have to replace the adhesive. The bottom section is said to contain conductive paste so if you redo that part with regular adhesive you will have problems with them sensing touch. Try not to touch that area at all.

do i need ahesive to put it all back together?

More than likely your LCD is broken. The bad news about all Galaxy series Samsungs is that the lens, digitizer and LCD are one piece. So if one part is broken you have to replace the whole thing. I will add this to the video description. The B stock LCDs are down to about $95 on Ebay. Otherwise you might want to try and find one with a different problem like a broken charging port or liquid damage that still has a good screen

Hi, my Stratosphere screen doesnt work, the screen has cracks but it still turns on, the touch buttons still works but the screen is just black. What do you think the problem is? And what will i need to buy to fix the problem?

  10. mikelv98 says:

Thanks. Frustration over incomplete teardown videos is one of the main reasons I started recording my repairs. A lot of what I’ve seen shows people just enough to damage other parts of their device.

  11. mikelv98 says:

Yes. The glass, digitizer and LCD are all one piece.

  12. mikelv98 says:

Generally any Samsung Galaxy series phone is worth significantly less with a broken lens/LCD. If it is CDMA- Verizon, Sprint etc… even more so. I hope that your $35 goes toward something good and if this video helped you save $ that’s even better.

  13. MrWorths says:

I was going to buy one tomorrow for $35 with a broken screen off of craigslist but now I can see that would be a terrible investment

  14. jentinkth says:

I have one that is cracked, but the display, phone functions, etc all work fine. You can feel the cracks on the outside. I guess you still have to do a complete tear down to replace just the glass, correct?

  15. lnxcthlc says:

By far, one of the best howto teardowns I have seen to date.

  16. mikelv98 says:

The lens, digitizer and LCD are all one piece so make sure that you get the whole thing. Buying just the glass is a waste of money because it won’t work by itself. Check my channel for the reassembly video as you requested. Good luck.

  17. noctilucamilaris says:

can you please please PLEASE make a video to show how to put everything back? plus i was wondering, my screen cracked, cant feel the broken glass on the outside. the phone turns on fine, there’s just no display. would getting a replacement lcd work, and do i need to get a digitizer?

  18. mikelv98 says:

You can often find “B” stock replacements on Ebay for a lot less. They are used but often work like new. I agree that if you are eligible for an upgrade you should definitely take advantage of a promotional price on a new phone. The trouble is for those who are mid-contract. Most Galaxy series Samsung phones justify an insurance policy although the deductible is usually $100-$130.

  19. MaxxFordham says:

What a waste. Seems like it would be better to just wait for upgrade elegibility and then get the phone at whatever cheap price you can that way.

If you won’t be upgrade-elegible for a long time, then I wonder if there are any used ones of these at used cell phone stores (like Cell Again) already, for not a bad price.

  20. MaxxFordham says:

Geesh, $230? Sounds like the price the phone should be as a whole!

And it makes ya wonder how and/or why someone on ebaY has a phone with broken brains but a good screen, to sell there! Heh, any ideas?

  21. mikelv98 says:

The most common reasons would be a flex cable which is damaged or not plugged in all of the way. Otherwise you might have gotten a bad LCD. This is assuming that you are sure that the phone is powering up. I usually test everything before reassembly by laying it out and connecting it to be sure that it does light up. That can save you a lot of time in case of a bad component.

  22. mikelv98 says:

If you look at the lenses you will notice that the sensors are on opposite sides making them incompatible. Sometimes the form factor will match and you might be able to plug it in (not recommended) but rest assured that you need to order the correct part if you want your phone to function properly. I wish that wasn’t the case but manufacturers do this for a rea$on.

By the way, thanks for the video, the adhesive was giving me some concern as I didn’t want to be to rough separating the components. I tried to post a link to the comparison of spec sheets, but youtube was freaking out…but you can find it at pdadb.net

Let me know what you think.

  24. frsmijr says:

Mike, I was wondering if this was the same Super AMOLED screen as the Samsung Epic 4G D700…they look EXACTLY the same on both sides and the spec sheets I pulled up only noted 1 or 2 mm difference in dimensions…You seem to have a good deal of experience with these phones and I was hoping you could confirm my hunch. The replacement screen and digitizer for the D700 is pretty widely available and is only about $90

  25. Tricia says:

I have a Samsung Stratosphere i405 that I dropped and cracked the screen. I bought a new LCD/digitizer/screen assembly and followed your videos onyoutube for dissambly and reassembly. Now that my phone is back together the key pad lights up but the screen is still blank. Have I possibly damaged something in the process? Or is something not connected properly?
